Paul from prison writes a letter to the young man Timothy. He reminds him not to be timid. He tells him not to be ashamed of the gospel but to speak. The Lord at His appearing brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. The gospel being true why would anyone be afraid? All who have faith in Jesus Christ are immortal you cannot die.
Timothy faced more than being laughed at, he faced imprisonment like Paul and possible execution, but Paul says don't fear these things. Paul encourages young Timothy to teach other men what he has taught him so that they could teach others also. This is the service of equipping the saints and is the great commission. "And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Mat.28.18-20).
Paul tells Timothy to remember Jesus a descendant of David is risen from the dead. This is all the proof anyone needs to know that Jesus is the Christ the promised Messiah of Israel. Paul tells Timothy to avoid empty chatter, because it leads to further ungodliness. He tells him to flee men like this and to also flee from youthful lust.
Paul also tells Timothy to avoid ignorant speculations because they cause quarrels. "The Lord's bond- servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. (2:24-26). Many will be led astray. Paul concludes by reminding Timothy to "preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction." (3:2)
