Joshua Commissioned

Numbers 27
The Four daughters of Zelophehad, who was of Manasseh, came to Moses about an inheritance for their father’s house. Their father died in the wilderness and did not have any sons. Moses inquired of the Lord and the law concerning property rights to the next of kin was given. After this, Joshua was commissioned to lead the sons of Israel across the Jordan river. Moses would die east of the Jordan because he disobeyed the word of the Lord and did not sanctify his name before the congregation, at the waters of Meribah.

The Lord Jesus Christ has promised eternal life to all who believe in him. When Joshua was commissioned, some of Moses’s authority was given to him. One would come later, who is greater than Moses, but all of the leaders between Moses and Messiah would be less than. The name Joshua means, “the LORD is salvation,” and this is the name given to the Messiah. Pronounced Yehoshua in Hebrew and translated Iēsous into Greek. Yehoshua is translated into English Joshua and Iēsous is translated into English Jesus. Thus, Joshua the son of Nun, was a type of Christ but not like Christ in all of his fullness. Like Christ, he was to lead the people into the promised land. Jesus will lead his people into the world to come, the new heaven and new earth. He is the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Jesus. (Jn 14:6)
